Although much has been written about the “digital divide”, very few programs have been put in place to begin addressing this problem. In a proactive effort to address the digital divide and prepare Ghanaian youth for the future , the Ghana Telecom University College (GTUC) is organizing its innovative programme Technology Camp 2009.
The goal is to channel youthful exuberance into productive and interesting experiences to exercise the mind and body, including global dialogue (through Global Kidlinks), and bringing together kids from all walks of life.
Throughout the months of July and August (July 20 – August 27), GTUC will be organizing a Technology Camp at its campuses at Tesano and Abeka. The focus of the Tech Camps will be on JHS and SHS students.
A Junior Techcamp will be organized for JHS students and a Senior Techcamp for SHS students. The camps will offer participants the opportunity to receive exciting hands-on experience with fascinating technology, while stimulating their creative minds-on learning. In addition, participants will experience firsthand the process of working in a collaborative group with peers, and learning in a project-based setting.
GTUC Technology Camp 2009 will be full day, 30 hour per week sessions. The camps will begin at 9:00am each day, and end at 4:00pm. Every camp will be packed chock-full with learning, field trips, interaction, discussions, seminars, and other hands-on activities.
Participants will have a wide selection of high-tech interests to choose from, with classes offered in three primary disciplines: information communication technology and multimedia production. Specific activities will range from learning hands-on computer skills (building computers, designing web sites, programming, developing software, networking computers, using Internet search engines, developing VR panoramas, etc.); and graphic design (visual communications, digital illustration, image editing, 3D modeling and animation, digital photography, and digital production techniques);.
In addition, participants will explore their technological quest with a host of different activities and experiences depending on the particular level. The exposure to new skills will enable them make informed decisions about whether they would be interested in pursuing careers in those selected fields. The Tech Camps will expose participants to a variety of career choices.
